Types of Appliances

Extra-oral Orthopedic Appliances

High-Pull Headgear
Restrains upper jaw growth in the downward and forward direction and helps reduce open bites
Must be worn 12-14 hours per day for approximately 12 months.
Cervical Headgear
Restrains upper jaw growth in the forward direction and helps reduce the overbite and overjet in a growing patient.
Must be worn 12-14 hours per day for approximately 12 months.
Reverse-Pull Headgear
Restricts and redirects lower jaw growth
Promotes more forward growth of the upper jaw
For patients with under bites
Must be worn 14-16 hours per day

Fixed Expanders Appliances
Used to increase the width of the arch/jaw to correct posterior cross bites or to increase the available space for tooth alignment
Expands skeletally and dentally
Each type of expander has its specific advantages and uses

Banded Rapid Palatal Expander
HAAS Rapid Palatal Expander
Quad Helix

Fixed Functional Appliances
Used to correct Class II (“overbite”) problems instead of using a headgear or extracting teeth.
Only used once all primary (baby) teeth are lost and in a growing patient
Worn for approximately 9-12 months
Cannot be removed by patient, attached to the 1st molars with bands or temporary crowns

MARA Functional Appliance
Herbst Functional Appliance

Class II (“overbite”) Bite Correctors
Overbite correction when rubber bands are not sufficient

Removable Functional Appliances
Used prior to any fixed orthodontic appliances (braces), usually between the ages of 8-11, while they are actively growing
Works by posturing the lower jaw forward, slowly shifting the lower teeth forward and the upper teeth back, correcting the “overbite”
Can be removed and inserted by patient
Worn full time for approximately 12 months

Bionator
(Removable Functional Appliance)
Twin Block
(Removable Functional Appliance)

Tongue Thrust/Finger Habit Appliance
Can be used in any patient with a tongue thrust swallow pattern or finger habit after the age of 4.
Usually remains fixed in the mouth for 4-6 months
Such habits can sometimes be addressed with myofunctional therapy as opposed to an oral appliance.
Tongue Crib Appliance

Sleep Apnea Appliances
Worn while sleeping
Postures lower jaw forward to open airway and allow for improved night time breathing

Removable Expanders
Usually used in early intervention (8-10 years of age)
Expands the dental arch (no skeletal expansion)

Removable Upper Expander
Removable Lower Expander

Removable Retainers
Passive appliances that retain the position of the teeth
Initially worn full-time following the removal of the braces for 3-6 months and then night time only for as long as possible

Hawley Retainers
Essex Clear Retainer

Fixed Retainers
Used for long term retention and space maintenance
Used when removable retainer wear is not expected to be consistent

Lower Lingual Holding Arch
Bonded lower lingual retainer

Sports Mouth Guard
It is recommended that any athlete engaging in a contact sport, i.e. basketball, football, soccer and lacrosse, wear a mouth guard.
