About Braces

What to Expect

For some, the term braces is synonymous with a beautiful smile, great bite, and good chewing function, while for others it is discomfort. A person’s experience with braces depends on several factors:

  1. Age
  2. Severity of misalignment and bite discrepancy
  3. Pain threshold
  4. Overall attitude and outlook
  5. Type of appliances used

Gone are the days of using metal bands around each tooth. Today, small brackets, either metal or tooth-colored, are bonded to each tooth and the alignment is attained using continuous light forces. Some choose the traditional brackets which use small colored rubber bands to hold the wire in place, offering the patient a way to have fun with the look of his or her braces. Yet others, prefer using self-ligating brackets to expedite the process. And finally, some opt for lingual (tongue-side) braces due to esthetic concerns (Refer to the section on Types of Braces).

Treatment duration typically ranges between one to three years, depending on the severity of the problem and the patient’s rate of growth.
Growth of a patient can have a positive or a negative effect on the treatment timing.
Diligent and consistent use of the required auxiliaries, such as rubber bands or headgears, will expedite the treatment and make sure the end goal is achieved efficiently.
Dr. Y uses the latest in 3D Imaging and orthodontic treatment. Using the SureSmile System, he is able to address many orthodontic issues in a more efficient manner, in turn reducing the length of treatment by up to 40%.
