About Braces
Oral Hygiene
| Brushing |
It is recommended to brush 3x per day while in braces, preferably using an electric tooth brush.
|
| Flossing |
Although flossing with braces can be time consuming, it is crucial to maintaining good oral hygiene and healthy gums. There are several options, including flosses with stiff tips that allow for easier threading of the floss underneath the archwire, floss threaders, or electric flossers.
|
| Water Pik |
A good way of irrigating the teeth and gums, removing much of the food and plaque that remains between the teeth and around the braces.
|
| Rinsing |
Rinses for orthodontic patients typically fall into two groups, 1) fluoride rinses (i.e., ACT, SmartRinse, Toms of Maine) for cavity prevention, and 2) antibacterial rinses (i.e., Crest ProHealth, Listerine). Dr. Y will recommend a suitable mouthwash based on each patient’s individual risk and need. |
