Bleaching
Whitening Strips |
Whitening Trays |
Whitening toothpastes/ varnishes/ rinses/ flossers
Over-the-Counter
Low concentration of the carbamide peroxide
Brighten your teeth if you are a very good brusher, brush many ties a day, and have a lot of patience.
Minimal Change observed if any
Very useful in maintaining the whitening achieved by using trays and strips
Bleach releasing disposable strips (Crest Strips)
Strips of plastic designed to adhere to the teeth
Applied and worn for several hours per day
7%-14% carbamide peroxide concentration as compared to 22%-32% found in professional bleaching systems takes longer to get the same results as compared to professional bleaching system provided by the dentist.
Advantages: no impressions required; less sensitivity since the strips do not apply pressure on the teeth.
Disadvantages: variable results reported (some not experiencing an change); strips may not adhere well to the teeth; strips to short to bleach all the desired upper teeth.
High concentration bleach in custom/ pre-fabricated trays
Attained through your dentist only and required a prescription
Applied using either a custom tray or pre-fabricated tray/ gel system
Achieves good results in anywhere from several hours to several weeks of regular use
Disadvantage: teeth may get sensitive during treatment but ends upon stopping the treatment
In-office bleaching (power bleaching):
The use of a concentrated hydrogen peroxide gel in conjunction with a high-intensity dental light
Quicker Results
More chair time required, therefore more expensive
Recent studies have shown this method to be less effective than the trays provided by the dentist.
Greater Risk for dental sensitivity than any other method
Over-the-Counter light bleaching kits
No more effective at whitening the teeth than using the over-the-counter bleach
Stick with the Crest White Strips or go to a dentist for the real thing.
