Prior to your child’s first visit to our office, you will receive a package in the mail. This package will include an introductory letter, a storybook about our office (for kids 6 years and younger), a medical/ dental history form, and our office brochure.
During the visit Dr. Y will perform a thorough exam, tailoring his approach to your child's age, dental history and medical history. Following the exam, he will review proper oral hygiene, diet, preventive measures and growth and development with you and your child.
The first visit focuses on making your child comfortable in the dental setting, while designing a dental hygiene program and diet that would reduce their risk of dental disease.
We are looking forward to seeing your child and making our office his/her "Dental Home".
Preventive dentistry is the practice of caring for your child's teeth to keep them healthy. Prevention helps to avoid cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, and more.
Dr. Y approaches caries (cavities) prevention and treatment from both a mainstream and alternative viewpoint, always searching for less invasive, safer and more comfortable modes of treatment.
There are many preventive procedures that our ofice have in place.
Our practice preventive procedures include:
Oral Hygiene Education
Nutritional Counseling & Education
Professional Dental Cleanings
Fluoride application and alternative when appropiate
Our office's "Continuing Dental Care Program" starts with your child's first visit. which Dr. Y recommends to have by age 2.
Each of our patients has a different story, with different obstacles and unique
oral care needs. Our Continuing Care program is designed to help your child to achieve better oral health.
Some children require minimal intervention, only needing to be evaluated every 6 months, with x-ray's exposed every 18-24 months. For patients that present with higher risk for caries (cavities) a more frequent protocol may be necessary to ensure that they maintain proper oral hygiene and control their diet appropriately.
Although much of medicine and dentistry is focused on treatment of disease, the best approach is prevention. We are committed to educating each patient and their parent on proper oral hygiene and nutrition, tailoring our recommendations based on the child's individual needs.
By monitoring dental development on a regular basis, Dr. Y is able to prevent small issues from becoming more severe, leading to more invasive and costly procedures.
Although great strides have been made in the last 50 years, caries are still a serious oral health concern. Caries are not uncommon, but they are preventable.
Unremoved plaque contains bacterial acid that, over time, will demineralize the hard surface of teeth. This demineralization causes dental caries. Dr. Y's approach to treat caries is based on being more conservative and less invasive depending on the severity or stage of the cavities (caries).

Being a father of four, Dr. Y understands the apprehension and anxiety parents have when confronted with the need to sedate their children for any purpose. As a result, and in contrast to the usual approach by pediatric dentists, Dr. Y has developed a more conservative approach, substantially reducing the need for sedation by spending the extra time necessary to make sure the child is at ease in the dental setting. Unfortunately, at times, when a patient is too young or apprehensive, or the required treatment is too invasive, traditional treatment in the dental chair is quite difficult and sometimes impossible. To ensure that the patient is safe and the treatment meets or exceeds the standard of care, General Anesthesia is necessary.
Our office has a long standing relationship with Dr. Alikhani, an extremely competent and caring anesthesiologist who helps us make the whole process as comfortable as possible for our patients and our parents. If you have questions or concerns feel free to contact us.
Special Needs Children
As a Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Y received advanced training in the treatment of special needs patients, ranging from mild ADHD to severe Autism, as well as children born with congenital defects or syndromes, such a cleft lip and palate. This subset of patients presents with more challenging treatment needs, whether behavorial, orthodontic, or restorative, with few practitioners capable of addressing those needs.
Dr. Y has been a member of The Craniofacial Team at CHOC since 2002, working side by side with geneticists, Oral Surgeons, Plastic Surgeons, Otolaryngologists, Audiologists, Speech Therapists and Social Workers to ensure that these patients receive the care they so desperately need. Helping our families with these unique challenges and improving their lives brings us a great deal of joy.
